I am a microbiologist by training and a biological engineer by practice, with a strong foundation in both disciplines. My academic journey began in India, where I earned my B.S. and M.S. in Microbiology from Panjab University. Driven by a passion for integrating biology with engineering, I pursued a Ph.D. in Chemical and Biological Engineering at SD Mines, USA, where I now lead the CellFe Lab.
At CellFe Labs, we are at the forefront of biomanufacturing, blending traditional fermentation, synthetic biology, and pioneering cell-free biomanufacturing to transform unconventional feedstocks—such as agricultural residues and plastics—into high-value biopolymers and biochemicals.
Beyond the lab, I am deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of scientific leaders. I encourage my students to think beyond the conventional and empower them to turn groundbreaking research into real-world applications. In my courses, CBE 217: ‘Chemical Engineering Material Balances’ and CBE 741: ‘Microbial and Enzymatic Processes,’ I draw from my research to create an integrated learning experience that deepens students' understanding of how biology and engineering intersect to drive innovation.
